12:00 pm – 5:00 pm Advanced Tissue Culture Workshop Percival/Vernon

The Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB) presents its annual workshop on ‘Managing Stem Cells: From Bench to Clinic” on May 31, 2014, Hyatt Regency Savannah, Savannah, Georgia. Stem cell transplantation represents a critical approach for the treatment of many malignant and non-malignant diseases. Stem cells such as iPS (induced Pluripotent Stem) cells have the potential to be used in therapies, as disease models or in drug screening. iPS cells have an advantage over embryonic stem cells, since they are made from adult cells and they can be derived from people with various diseases background to create models or even therapies based on a person’s genetic make-up. iPS cells have begun to change the face of biology and medicine – researchers have published on cellular models derived from iPS cells for a wide variety of conditions such as heart defects, schizophrenia and epidermolysis bullosa. In addition to the medical applications, iPS and stem cells can be used to generate cultures with organ specific function. These cultures can be used in large scale screens for changes in tissue-specific function and pathways induced by drugs and chemicals. Some of the obstacles of iPS cells are the inefficiency of reprogramming of these cells which sometimes can induce mutations. Often times the reprogrammed cells cannot develop into some cell types and even those that are reprogrammed to differentiate are not always good models for the disease. This workshop will focus on issues pertaining to best practices for managing and banking stem cells to make them suitable for clinical applications. Some of the issues to address will include, ideal growth conditions, selection of appropriate medium and optimal conditions for cryopreservation. An overall comprehensive strategy expanding, cryopreserving and recovering of stem cells is needed to get reliable and reproducible results while meeting regulatory requirements.

Topics to be presented:

  • Good Tissue Culture Practices for the Culturing of Stem Cells
  • Optimizing Media for Optimal Growth and Differentiation of Stem Cells
  • Growing of Liver Stem Cells in Alginate Beads for Transplantation and Toxicology Studies
  • Bioreactor-based Expansion of cGMP Production of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Participation is limited to workshop pre-registrants.
