Plants have co-evolved with humans to provide not only food, fiber and fuel, but also pharmaceuticals. With a recent landmark approval and commercialization of the first plant-made human pharmaceutical, molecular farming has come of age and holds promising strategies for producing many valuable recombinant proteins for human and veterinary medicine as well as agriculture and industry. Various plant-based production platforms including whole-plants, aquatic plants, plant cell suspensions, and plant tissues (hairy roots) as well as cultured non-transgenic whole medicinal plants offer a range of technologies for therapeutic production and delivery. In this session some of the newest emerging examples of these new therapeutics will be described along with novel approaches for their technical development and/or delivery.

Ethnomedicine and the Biochemical Aspects of Plants in Health and Disease

Ethnomedicine refers to the study of the traditional medical practices utilized by many different cultures since ancient times throughout the world. Indigenous plants, prepared in diverse ways, satisfy nutritional and medicinal needs for the treatment and prevention of disease, and for wellness. Much, if not all, of this knowledge has been passed down orally from generation to generation. In recent times, an enhanced appreciation has developed for the role of plants and plant components in healthy diets and in the treatment of maladies ranging from the sting, itch and swelling caused by insect bites to treatments for chronic diseases. Among the more familiar types of plant-derived products currently found commercially available are herbal supplements, nutraceuticals, essential oils, cosmeceuticals and as leads for drug development. It is of importance that efforts to preserve the knowledge of traditional plant remedies and diets continue and that we develop safe, sustainable and ethically responsible ways of using and sharing such knowledge. It is unfortunate that due to endangered habitats, some plants, as well as the knowledge of how people use them, are at risk of extinction. This symposium will focus on several fronts: (1) the results of ethnomedicinal research especially of plants with antiviral, antioxidant, nutraceutical and anticancer activity, (2) research on P450 drug-herb interactions and (3) research on the interactions of bioactive plants and plant components at a molecular /biochemical level within the body to better understand functionality and the potential for treatment or prevention of chronic diseases such as cancers or as a means to maintain overall good health.

Gene Discovery and Functional Genomics

Tremendous advances in gene discovery and functional genomics in crop plants have been made over the past decade or so, and many Agronomically important genes associated with traits of biological and agronomical interests have been identified, characterized through modern molecular genetics tools. Now we approach an exciting stage where new molecular information is accumulating faster than ever, and this vast genome information is playing a crucial role in gene identification, mapping and quantitative trait locus discovery in crop plant species. This symposium will focus on recent progress in gene discovery and functional genomics in the areas of biomass production, yield, biotic or abiotic stress in either economically important crop or model plant species.

Transformation Strategies and Regulatory Oversight

The number of hectares used globally to grow GM crops is increasing – a trend that is expected to continue. Issues of concern, though not entirely unique to GM crops, include environmental risk assessment, regulatory challenges resulting from scientific advances, impacts on developing countries, and non-crop GM applications. Environmental risk assessment is a common but ambiguous term that results in a challenge to determine measurable environmental characteristics that match policy goals. Questions arise as a result of scientific advances expands the range of applications of GM crops such as new crops, traits, and gene stacking in a context of differing regulatory approaches and priorities among and between developed and developing countries. GM crops are primarily grown in developed countries but provide potential benefits to developing countries, resulting in unique regulatory challenges and opportunities. Lastly, the primary agricultural application of genetically modified organisms has been crop plants. However, future applications will be much more diverse and will include transgenic insects and microbes, as well as applications such as energy and environmental remediation. This session will discuss the range of issues of GM crops with an emphasis on the information required.

Advanced Microscopy Analysis of Cells and Tissues

The most fundamental processes associated with cell biology and gene expression are sub-cellular in their nature and are invisible to the human eye. As such, microscopy that magnifies and generates visual and photographic images of fine objects plays a central role in enabling critical observations to be made. Since the beginning of the microscope in the 1600s, to the modern, sophisticated fluorescent, confocal, and electron microscopes the microscopy field has come a long way. This workshop session will focus on current advances and tools in microscopy analyses that can be implemented in identifying sub-cellular phenomenon and organelles in live plants and animals cell cultures and defining the complex ultrastructure of tissue sections.

Multidisciplinary Approaches for Answering Biological Questions

This session features multidisciplinary approaches from a variety of fields including chemistry, engineering, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and oncology to answer complex biological questions. The development and use of peptidomimetic libraries for applications from basic cell biology research to drug discovery will be discussed. The session will also focus on a chemical biology and proteomics approach to develop biosensors for studying intracellular phosphorylation signaling and the disruptions that occur in these complex signaling pathways in cancer. The use of a novel microfluidic in vitro research model system to study signaling events between different cell types will also be discussed. A multidisciplinary approach to research provides us with a unique opportunity for the identification of novel drug targets and therapeutic approaches, and with the ability to study complex cellular signaling events that contribute to disease.

Optmizing Plant Micropropagation: The Genotype Effect

Since the early 1980s the standard approach to optimizing a shoot culture micropropagation protocol for a given species typically involves screening the effects of plant growth regulator type, concentration and combinations for optimal shoot proliferation (Stage II), rooting (Stage III) and ex vitro acclimatization (Stage IV). Often the influence of donor plant genotype(s) is overlooked and could be a contributing factor in the difficulties frequently faced by other laboratories in repeating protocols. During the session the influence of genotype on in vitro and ex vitro growth performance of diverse crops will be presented.
