Dr. Piero Barone

Dear SIVB Members,

As I sat down to write this end-of-year message, an email landed in my inbox with the subject line: “Reflecting on your journey with SIVB.” The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. It was a reminder of our upcoming 80th anniversary, a milestone that invites us to pause and reflect on what this Society truly means, not just as an organization, but as a community that has shaped countless lives and careers.

And it got me thinking about the communities we hold dear, especially during this time of year. As the holiday season arrives, we find ourselves drawn to the people and places that feel like home. We gather around tables with family and friends, sharing stories that make us laugh until our cheeks hurt, and holding close the people who have shaped our lives. We return to traditions that ground us, celebrate connections that sustain us, and pause to reflect on the communities that have defined our journey.

These are the moments that remind us of what community truly means: a place where we belong, where we are seen, and where we become our truest selves.

Like the families and friendships we celebrate during the holidays, SIVB has become that kind of community for so many of us. Somewhere along the way, something shifted. SIVB stopped being just a society and became your community, a place you carry with you, a group of people who now feel like family, a professional home you return to year after year.

That transformation happened differently for each of us.

Perhaps it was at your first annual meeting, when a conversation with a stranger turned into a collaboration that changed the direction of your research. Maybe it was when a mentor took you under their wing, seeing potential in you before you could see it in yourself. Or it could have been reading a paper in one of our journals, attending a workshop, or simply realizing that there were others out there who shared your passion, your curiosity, and your drive.

For eight decades, this Society has been so much more than an organization; it has been a gathering place for scientists who believe in the power of discovery and the beauty of connection.

These moments big and small are what have woven SIVB into the fabric of our lives. As we approach our 80th anniversary, we carry with us the weight and wonder of all that has been built. For eight decades, this Society has been so much more than an organization; it has been a gathering place for scientists who believe in the power of discovery and the beauty of connection. Generations of researchers have walked through our doors, leaving behind not just scientific breakthroughs, but friendships, mentorships, and a legacy of lifting one another up.

This community was created by those who came before us. It has been nurtured by those who stand beside us today. And it will be carried forward by those who follow. That is something worth celebrating not just at milestone anniversaries, but every day, and especially during this season of gratitude and togetherness.

So, as you gather with your loved ones this holiday season, surrounded by the warmth of memories past and the promise of moments yet to come, we hope you also feel the warmth of this community. Because just as family and friends remind us of who we are and where we come from, SIVB reminds us of who we can become when we pursue knowledge together.

From all of us at SIVB, we wish you a holiday season filled with peace, laughter, and cherished memories. And when the new year begins, may we continue to build this community together celebrating the science, the friendships, and the shared journey that make SIVB not just a society, but a home.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for a Wonderful New Year!

With warm regards,

Piero Barone
