2022 Program Summary

The Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB) is pleased to announce that their annual meeting is going to be an in-person event (SIVB 2022) and will be offered from June 4-7, 2022, at the Town and Country Hotel in San Diego, CA. While the Society is excited to have everyone meet in-person after two years of meeting virtually, we understand that many areas still have travel restrictions, therefore several select sessions will also be available through a virtual format.

The meeting aims to bring together the world’s top academic and industry leaders to share their latest research in emerging technologies, genome editing, genomics, organoids, synthetic biology, in vitro technologies, and other fields. It also bridges the gap between plant and animal biotechnology research, thus providing an opportunity to learn advances with broad relevance across kingdoms of life.

The Program Committee is committed to providing an excellent scientific program and has put together sessions to facilitate collaboration and networking with leading experts. Dr. Thomas Hartung, who is a leader in the field of toxicology and alternative methods to animal testing, will be providing the Keynote address on “Advancing Cell Culture to Meet Scientific and Societal Needs” during the opening ceremony on Sunday, June 5, 2022. He is the Director of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) and inaugural holder of the Doerenkamp-Zbinden Endowed Chair in Evidence-based Toxicology in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Hartung was instrumental in accelerating the alternative methods validation process and facilitating a global regulatory harmonization in toxicity testing. Dr. Hartung has received numerous awards and is well recognized for his research into the use of toxicity pathways to predict developmental neurotoxicity.

The meeting begins Saturday June 4, 2022, with an evening panel discussion, “Design of Experiments.” One plenary session has been planned for each day of the meeting, bringing experts in the field for both plant and animal sciences to share the knowledge and advances on topics entitled “Advanced Application of Site-Directed Nucleases,” “Michael E. Horn Emerging Technologies Symposium on Future Foods”, and “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Plant and Animal Sciences.” A joint symposium entitled “New Approaches to Vaccine Development” has also been organized to bridge the gap between the two disciplines. In addition to 4 plenary sessions, there will be concurrent symposia throughout the day.

SIVB is always striving to create meaningful opportunities for students and young researchers. To that end, educational symposia, luncheons, and workshops have been organized by the student committee. There are opportunities for competitive student and post-doctoral oral presentations and non-competitive student oral presentations. A student workshop “State-of-the-Art Cell Imaging Technologies” is being offered on Sunday evening, June 5.

The Plant Biotechnology Section is excited to present a variety of topics on the basic scientific principles and applied aspects of micropropagation, plant conservation, genetic transformation, gene editing and cannabis biotechnology. In addition to a variety of submitted oral and poster presentations, several exciting symposia and workshops have been organized and include: “Frontiers in Gene Editing for Crop Improvement”, “Advances in Double Haploid Technology”, “Plant Growth Regulators”, “Alternative Approaches to Plastid Engineering”, “Advances in Cannabis Biotechnology”, and “In Vitro Technologies for Plant Conservation and Gene Banking”. Join us to learn the latest in in vitro plant biology.

The In Vitro Animal and Cell Sciences section of SIVB is thrilled to offer many exciting sessions for SIVB 2022. The sessions cover topics such as late-breaking research on extracellular matrix and tissue engineering, cell imaging, organoid technology, single cell analysis techniques as well as the application of new technologies through academic, industry and regulatory agencies perspectives. Interactive poster and oral presentations will enhance the breadth of research exchange.

To accommodate the attendees that cannot meet in-person, some of the presentations will be prerecorded. A virtual poster gallery with pre-recorded audio description by authors will also be provided. The speakers are leaders in the field and expected to provide tantalizing research talks.

The Program Committee is looking forward to seeing everyone in-person and engaging in friendship and scientific discussion. Please join us for the Ships of the Seven Seas outing on Tuesday evening, June 7 at the Maritime Museum. What a wonderful way to complete the meeting by enjoying friendship and the beauty of San Diego.
