Dr. Charles Armstrong (Monsanto) was awarded a 2014 Outstanding Scientist Award from the Academy of Science-St. Louis for his pioneering work that led to the commercialization of the first insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant corn varieties.

Dr. Niels Bols (SIVB Lifetime achievement award 2012), officially retired this past August 31 from the University of Waterloo where he was associated with the Department of Biology since 1978. On July 25, 2013, students and colleagues organized a symposium in his honour and gave him a “Stanley cup” and a special cake for his contributions (see picture). This was a celebratory event where many former students (MSc’s, PhD’s, MD’s, LLD’s, etc.) attended and reminisced of the good times they had at the Bols’ lab, and who came from as far away as New Zealand and Germany to honour their mentor. Over the 35 years as a faculty member at the University of Waterloo, he taught close to 50,000 undergraduate students (mostly in his massive introductory cell biology classes), and was very active in research. He held continuous operating grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and trained innumerable students with whom he published over 200 papers in cell biology, toxicology, immunology, virology, etc. Although officially retired, he continues contributing to undergraduate teaching, albeit at much reduced numbers, from about 1600 per year down to less than 100, and continues to tinker in his lab culturing fish cells, and is still supervising 3 PhD students and a Post Doc, as well as several undergraduate students. Dr. Joshua Gasiorowski (Midwestern University, Downers Grove, IL) has coauthored the paper titled “The influence of substrate topography on the migration of corneal epithelial wound borders” which was published in the journal Biomaterials (34(37):9244-51, 2013).
