A new year always brings the feeling of Re-Birth, Re-Commitment and becoming Re-Energized in whatever we happen to be doing. This is also how we should think about the SIVB and what we can do together to further promote our society and our mission which is to “foster exchange of knowledge of in vitro biology of cells, tissues and organs from both plant and animals (including humans)”.

The Society for In Vitro Biology is pleased to announce that Dr. Steve Briggs will provide the keynote address at the 2013 In Vitro Biology Meeting (June 15 - 19) in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Briggs received his undergraduate degree in Botany from the University of Vermont (Burlington, VT), and his Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology from Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI). He spent the first part of his career in industry, where he previously served as a Director at Pioneer/Dupont, and as President of the Torrey Mesa Research Institute.

The Fellow Award recognizes current members of the SIVB who have been active members for at least 10 years. A Fellow has made outstanding contributions in their area of specialization or discipline to include research, teaching, and administration in public, government, academic, or private industry activities. The Society for In Vitro Biology honored Dannette Connor-Ward, Tetsuji Okamoto, and Peggy J. Ozias-Akins with Fellow Awards at the 2012 World Congress on In Vitro Biology. This issue of the In Vitro Report will highlight Dr.Tetsuji Okamoto.

Professor Akira Sakai, a pioneer of plant cryobiology and plant cryopreservation, passed away on the 5th of October after a long hospitalization. He was 92-years old. Dr. Sakai was an honorary member of the Society for In Vitro Biology.
