Price, SIVB President
Dear SIVB Members,
The Fall Board of Directors (BOD) meeting was held on October
27th at the beautiful Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Resort,
the home of our 2008 World Congress (June 14-18). The resort
is northwest of Tucson at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
The views from the resort are breathtaking. The hotel, accommodations
and location are perfect for our meeting. The Program committee,
under Dave Ellis, has done an excellent job to bring us an
outstanding and truly International scientific program and
along with a fun Social Program, the meeting promises to be
very special. Please plan to attend and consider bringing
The BOD was updated on the overall 2008 scientific program
symposia, speakers, and fundraising. The keynote speaker
for the World Congress is Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, the first
recipient of World Food Prize. Dr. Swaminathan has been called
a living legend by Javier Perez de Cuellar - Secretary General
of the United Nations. He is, among numerous other honors,
a fellow of the US Academy of Science. The BOD voted to
have the 2009 annual meeting in Charleston, SC and to jointly
meet with the IAPB in 2010 in St. Louis.
Todd Jones, chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, presented
"Policy Guidance" for the development of a not-for-profit
SIVB Foundation. The Guidance was accepted and we will continue
moving towards implementation.
The 2008 budget was presented, discussed and accepted, along
with a continuation of New Beginnings Management (NBM) as
the Society's Administrative manager. Publications Chair,
Mike Horn and NBM updated the Board on the status of our 2
journals and transition to Springer. Dwight Tomes has accepted
the position as the next Editor-in-Chief of In Vitro Cellular
and Developmental Biology - Plant. The BOD also approved a
Guidance for nominating and approving candidates for Section
and Society awards which had been submitted by David Jayme
and Wayne Parrott with input by both the awards and student
awards committees. The BOD approved Emeritus status to Joseph
Feder, Bruce Casto, Glenn Bruce Collins, George Martin, R.
Ian Freshney, Lynne Rutzky, Gerhard Kalmus and Rocco J. Filazzola.
On September 13, we lost a long-time and very active member,
Len Schiff. The December In Vitro Report had a beautiful memorial
tribute to him written by Sandra Schneider. We were friends
for over 30 years and I will miss him. In his honor the SIVB
has named the session "Current Status of Tissue-engineered
Product Regulation: A Global View on the Relationship of Science
and Practicality", to be presented at the upcoming World
Congress, the "Leonard J. Schiff Memorial Symposium".
